Common Induction Standards
Common Induction Standards were developed by Skills for Care in 2005 and came in to effect across the social care field as from 1st October 2006.
They are a set of induction standards designed for people entering the social care field and for those changing roles within the social care field. They can be used to ensure that all workers new to your organisation are inducted to a satisfactory standard. They are an externally recognised standard that are then portable within the social care field.
There are sets of six standards that need to be adhered to:
· understanding principles of care
· understanding the organisation and role of the worker
· maintaining safety at work
· communicating effectively
· recognising and responding to abuse and neglect
· developing as a worker
Each standard contains a number of areas of knowledge that workers need to know about before they can work unsupervised. How this knowledge is gained is flexible and can include observation, reading books, attending training courses or discussion with other staff. Managers assess staff progress and sign off the induction standards themselves.
The induction standards are designed to be completed within the first 12 weeks of a new employee starting. They enable workers to give high quality care and support to clients, provide recognition of their work and prepare them for entry on to NVQ programmes and Continual Professional Development.
CIS documents are available to download at the bottom of the page. There are the standards with a glossary which outlines how they link to NVQ requirements; a manager’s guide: a guide for new workers; a certificate for managers to sign to confirm that standards have been met; workbooks for each of the standards and a flowchart outlining the CIS process.
